Tuesday Poem 3rd Birthday Communal ‘Jazz’ Poem (2013)
It begins on April 2, 2013 here and ends April 23, 2013.
It begins on April 2, 2013 here and ends April 23, 2013.
Thank you to the Tuesday Poets taking part - 18 poets from 9 cities and 4 countries.
– Like a jazz composition
this poem is improvisational and free. We ask that each poet improvises from the stanza before – and, if you like, the stanzas
before that – picking up and using rhythm or phrases or lines or words or responding to rhythm/phrases/words and
using them to create something that shows the
individual poet’s voice.
– There’s no theme but it might arise. Rhythm &
language are the focus.
–
Each stanza is a maximum
6 lines, minimum 1.
–
Check the poem on the
blog www.tuesdaypoem.blogspot.com sometime after 10 am NZ Time the day before you have to post – there is a NZ clock on the blog
(sidebar). Allow for some delays. If the poet before you on the roster is not
up by midday NZ Time, start work in a word document or on paper responding to
what’s there.
–
To POST: Log into the
blog. Click ‘edit’ under the poem title. Leave a line break. Type the number of your stanza. On the line underneath, type
in your poem - do not ‘cut and paste’ as it throws out the fonts. Post on or
before 10 am NZ Time on the day you’re rostered. From 6 am NZ Time is fine.
(Country variations are in brackets after a poet’s name.)
–
You can’t schedule the post because the poem has to
stay online and scheduling a new stanza removes it.
–
Write your name at the bottom of the poem with the
number of your stanza beside it eg. 1.Harvey. Click ‘preview’ to check it’s ok.
POST.
–
If you miss your cue,
do not fret, just email me & Claire marymac21@gmail.com or clarab@earthlight.co.nz
we can slot you into one of the ‘gap’ days.
–
Tell friends on
Facebook Twitter or via email! Watch the poem grow.

WHAT TO DO:
Log in to the Tuesday Poem blog as usual. If this is new to you - login to your blogger blog and you'll see TP there alongside your personal blog - for wordpress newbies, go to www.blogspot.com and log in. If you haven't received your invitation to be editor yet, email Mary.
ON THE BLOG:
Go to 'POSTS' - go to the BIRTHDAY POEM post - click EDIT under the title - TYPE your line into the poem DO NOT CUT AND PASTE (it messes up the fonts) - at the bottom of the poem write your name as author - click SAVE - check it looks ok - LOG OUT.
If you can, email the person following you to say you've got your line up.
If the poet before you hasn’t posted up to an hour after the deadline send an email to the poet (I'll send out the list with proper names beside them) and to me. Wait and see. If nothing, then go ahead and post.
Any problems at all - email me your line and cc the person after you.
TIMES:
The times are NZ Standard Time - check the clock in the sidebar to see what that is.
NZ /Australia have just come off DAYLIGHT SAVING (on the Sunday) and the UK, US, Italy, Spain have just begun.
WRITING AND EDITING:
There is no theme except this vague idea: the sounds of a birthday -
Watch the flow of the poem. Lines can begin half way along and end in the middle of a line. One to 1.5 lines is ideal. Two lines is too long this time. Try and post lines that tip over onto the next line. Use spaces – line breaks etc. as you see fit.
Watch for consistency – if there appear to be stanzas or couplets unfolding, or a particular rhythm, try and stick with that. Try and steer clear of explicit end-rhyme unless appropriate.
Your lines need to work with/echo the lines immediately above them in terms of rhythm and sound and meaning etc (email the poet before you if a line needs explaining).
If you want to change a line after you have posted, email any amendments to me. Suggested improvements to the whole poem also welcome. There will only be minor editing on the poem for sense/flow/consistency etc before it's 'posted' as a final poem on April 17.
HAPPY WRITING!!
Mary and Claire
Tuesday Poem was One Year Old in 2011. We celebrated on the first Tuesday in April with a communal poem called 'Tuesday' where we all contributed 1-2 lines over the week. Doing it over the week gave us time to really think about our contributions and allowed our blogreaders to follow the progress of the poem. The final poem was posted for a week from April 12.
Birthday Badge with candle by Claire Beynon Dunedin, NZ (using her pewter quill).
Cake by T Clear in Seattle, Washington.
